Flydubai chairman, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said: “We are talking about another 50 aircraft. If the team reaches a decision, we hope to make an announcement at the Dubai Air Show.”
He added that the airline is looking at Boeing 737s and Airbus 320 models.
Analyst Saj Ahmad commented: "flydubai is unlikely to break its bond with the 737 family and for that reason, coupled with the fact that the Airbus A320neo is heavily booked, that the 737 MAX will get the not at the Dubai-based airline.
“Commonality with the existing 737-800 fleet, alongside proven reliability and robustness of the CFM International engines found on both 737 families, coupled with lower weight and fuel burn than the competing A320neo, flydubai will find it hard to resist the overtures Boeing is no doubt making with the 737 MAX family. While current 737-800 deliveries are complete in just three years, the 737 MAX doesn't enter service until late 2017 and flydubai can ill afford not to have new airplanes in its fleet for that duration so we shouldn't be surprised to see more 737-800s join the fleet between 2016 and whenever flydubai takes delivery of its impending 737 MAXs.”
Ahmad added: “The 737 MAX 8 is the front-runner for flydubai and while the bigger 737 MAX 9 will offer even better economics, the carrier will no doubt have flexibility to swap its orders between the 737 variants on offer. Indeed, the current 737-900ER is still very much in the mix at flydubai as well and has been opined about for a while, so this may well also feature as part of a bridging order from 2016 onwards."
