От Lev.bg :

Проблеми при монтажа отлагат доставки на Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Pressure still on as Boeing progresses towards 787 first flight

Boeing is making progress towards a first flight of the 787 at the end of March, but still faces pressure on its revised schedule. The company has declined to comment on reports that the power-on milestone for Dreamliner One has slipped three weeks.
Citing sources inside the Everett final-assembly plant, Flight affiliate FlightBlogger says Boeing has shifted significant manpower resources to achieve power-on by the end of January.
Declining to confirm or deny the report, Boeing says it is "focused on our milestones for airplane number one and doing everything we can to meet them".
In December, new 787 programme manager Pat Shanahan identified power-on as a critical goal and said he was focused on the milestone "because we can then retire risk around the integration of the airplane[and] our schedule becomes much more predictable".
Flightblogger reports Dreamliner One has been moved to the next assembly station in advance of power-on, allowing the static-test airframe to move forward and clearing the way for the fatigue-test airframe to move out of the wing and body join tooling.
The join tooling will then be available for mating of the major structural assemblies of the second flight-test aircraft, which is expected to begin by the middle of January after arrival of the wings from Mitsubishi in Nagoya and fuselage sections from Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita and Global Aeronautica and Vought Aircraft Industries in Charleston.
According to Flightblogger's sources, the components for Dreamliner Two that have arrived at Everett have significantly reduced travelled work, the major issue that forced Boeing to delay the 787's first flight by six months.

Gulf Air ordering 787s for 2016 but considering earlier lease

Bahraini flag-carrier Gulf Air is to begin taking delivery of its newly-ordered Boeing 787s from 2016 but is looking at arranging leases to introduce the type earlier.
The airline has confirmed that it is ordering 16 firm 787s – currently the 787-8, although the agreement allows for conversion to larger variants – and placing purchase rights on eight more.
Gulf Air says it will make an engine decision at a later date. A spokesman for the airline says that the carrier opted for the twin-jet because it has “unmatched performance and capabilities”.
The carrier is valuing the order at up to $6 billion, at catalogue prices, if all the purchase rights are exercised.
“Twenty-four aircraft is a huge order,” says the spokesman. “This will be the backbone of our fleet, and take over the long-haul operation.”
But while the aircraft will be delivered from 2016, he says the carrier wants to begin its fleet-replacement sooner, adding: “We are working with Boeing to have the 787 leased earlier.”
He says an interim lease arrangement could result in the airline introducing the type from 2010.
Gulf Air is also intending to prepare its crews for the aircraft, he adds, by acquiring a 787 simulator for its new Bahrain-based training centre.
During the Dubai Air Show last November the airline said it would overhaul its fleet with up to 35 aircraft. The spokesman says the carrier is seeking 45, including short-haul types, and that it could yet increase the long-haul component.
“It depends on what’s available. We’re still talking to both [Airbus and Boeing],” he says, and adds that the airline has not ruled out the use of regional types.
Gulf Air has a long-haul fleet based on the Airbus A330 and A340, as well as a few Boeing 767s which are being phased out. It also has Airbus A320s for short- and medium-haul routes, but recently started using leased Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Boeing confirms three-month delay to 787 first flight

Boeing has delayed the first flight of the 787 by three months, to the end of the second quarter, to provide additional time to complete assembly of the first aircraft.
Deliveries are now expected to begin in early 2009, rather than late 2008. Boeing will hold a conference call later today to discuss the delay. The company had planned to deliver 109 aircraft by the end of 2009.
In a statement, Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief executive Scott Carson says "we continue to be challenged by start-up issues in our factory and in our extended global supply chain".
The rate at which jobs are being completed on Dreamliner One has not improved sufficiently to maintain the current schedule, he says.
"Our revised schedule is based upon updated assessments from the 787 management of the progress we have made and the lessons we have learned to date," Carson says. "This includes our experience on the factory floor completing production work on the airplane that was originally intended to be done by our suppliers."
Boeing says it will work will customers and suppliers to assess the impact of the delay on the flight test programme and entry into service. this will include an assessment of supplier progress in delivering more complete assemblies for subsequent aircraft.

Spain's Air Europa orders up to 16 Boeing 787s

Spain’s Air Europa has ordered up to 16 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered Boeing 787-8 aircraft in an apparent reversal of its decision to take Airbus A350s for long-haul operations.
Air Europa was the first airline to express formal interest in the original A350 design, and placed an order for 10, but did not convert the order when Airbus revamped the design as the A350 XWB.
Airbus chief commercial officer for customers John Leahy expressed doubts in Toulouse last week that Air Europa would re-commit to the European twin-jet.
Rival Boeing has today identified the Palma de Mallorca-based operator as the customer for eight firm 787-8s previously listed in the airframer’s order books for 2007.
Air Europa managing director Maria Jose Hidalgo says: “After further development of the 787 by Boeing, it became very clear to our pilots, our fleet planners and our accountants that the 787 would deliver the best economics while also offering superior satisfaction for our passengers.”
The airline will use the jets on services to Argentina, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
Boeing adds that the carrier has taken purchase rights on a further eight 787s. It values the agreement at $1.3 billion at catalogue prices.

Един доста интересен потенциален проблем.

According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aeroplane may have a serious security vulnerability in its on-board computer networks that could allow passengers to access the plane's control systems.

Всяка нова екстра води до нови проблеми.

Boeing begins final assembly of second 787

Boeing has started final assembly of the second of six flight test aircraft for the 787 programme, passing a critical milestone after months of production delays.
The arrival of the second 787's subassemblies from six major suppliers also marked another critical step, with each of the sections in much healthier shape than previous shipments.
“The degree of completeness of sections at the partners is significantly better than Airplane One,” says Steve Westby, vice-president of 787 final assembly and change incorporation. “Condition of assembly is much better and we will see continued improvements on the condition of each assembly shipped.”
The second 787, now in the major join position at the final assembly facility Everett in Washington, is the fourth on the production line. It follows the static-test and fatigue-test airframes, now also in final assembly.
Meanwhile, the global 787 manufacturing team has 21 aircraft in various stages of production.
More than eight months have passed since the roll-out of for the first 787 on July 8. A production-system breakdown discovered shortly afterwards eventually pushed the first flight from August 2007 to June 2008, and first delivery from May 2008 to early 2009.
